Acronym

Greater Rochester International Airport (GRIA) was established in 1927 as the Rochester Municipal Airport. It served as a hub for the early aviation industry and was also used by the US military during World War II. GRIA experienced significant expansion in its early years, with more than 100 acres of land acquired by the City of Rochester for airport use. The airport went through several name changes over the years before settling on Greater Rochester International Airport in 1968.

In 1982, GRIA saw a major expansion with the opening of its new terminal building. This terminal offered an array of amenities, including a restaurant, gift shop, and business center, that helped to draw more travelers to the airport. In addition to passenger services, GRIA continued to be used for cargo operations and flight training throughout this time period. The airport also underwent several renovations over this period, such as installing new lighting systems and expanding its parking facilities.

In 2006, GRIA opened an additional terminal building that included additional shops and restaurants for travelers. Later that same year, it became one of only two airports in New York State to receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to use the latest instrument landing system (ILS). This ILS allowed aircrafts to land at GRIA even during periods of low visibility due to inclement weather conditions. In 2011, GRIA opened a new control tower which provided air traffic controllers better visibility and improved communication capabilities with pilots flying into or out of the airport.

Location
The airport is located three miles southwest of downtown Rochester, just off Interstate 390. The best way to get to the airport for drivers arriving from outside the city is via I-390. Take this to exit # 18 and then follow the signs to the parking lots.

Passengers arriving by train take the train to the Rochester Amtrak Rail Station and change to the RGRTA public bus # 2 or # 4 at the nearby Transportation Center in downtown.
