Las Vegas – McCarran International Airport opened its doors for the first time in June of 1948. The airport was named after Senator Pat McCarran, who was a former Nevada Senator and prominent figure in Las Vegas. The airport was initially designed to be a “reliever” airport for Los Angeles International Airport which had become overcrowded. At its opening, the airport only had two runways and one terminal building. However, the airport saw steady growth over the years as more airlines began offering service to Las Vegas and as the number of visitors to the city increased.

The first major expansion of the airport came in 1972 when a new terminal was built. This new terminal increased the number of gates available at McCarran from 15 to 42 and also allowed for more international flights to be offered at the airport. In 1995, McCarran opened its first international concourse which allowed passengers from around the world to fly directly into Las Vegas without having to transfer planes in other cities such as Los Angeles or Denver. In January 2005, a $2 billion expansion project began that included construction of a brand new terminal with more than 20 gates and an automated people mover system connecting all terminals within the airport complex. By 2010, McCarran International Airport had become one of busiest airports in America with over 45 million passengers traveling through it each year. Today, McCarran is continually expanding with plans for additional terminals and runways being discussed by local officials in order to accommodate even more travelers each year.

Location
The airport, which opened in 1942, is located about 5 kilometers south of downtown Las Vegas (Las Vegas Strip), in the suburb of Paradise. The entrance to the terminal area is on Nevada State Route 171 (Airport Spur Connector). The fastest way to get to State Route 171 from outside of the city is via Interstate I-215 at exits 9-11 or Interstate I-15 at exit 36.

Between the airport and the Las Vegas Strip or Downtown Transportation Center (DTC ) regularly take bus routes # 108 and 109 of RTC Transit,
from the DTC there is a connection to bus route # 106 to North Las Vegas Airport, you can find out all current departure times directly on site. Otherwise, the arrival and onward journey is also possible with taxis, rental cars and limousines.
