Northeast Philadelphia Airport was originally built in 1941 by the City of Philadelphia as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The airport was designed to be a major air hub for the city and surrounding region. The first commercial airline to operate out of Northeast Philadelphia Airport was Eastern Air Lines, which began service in 1945. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Northeast Philadelphia Airport served as a major hub for passenger and cargo flights throughout the region. In 1964, a major expansion project began at the airport that included a new terminal building and additional runways.
In 1976, with increased competition from nearby regional airports, Northeast Philadelphia Airport saw its passenger numbers decline significantly. To help make up for lost revenue, airport officials began offering discounted rates to private pilots and general aviation users. This move allowed smaller aircraft operators to use the airport for business or pleasure flights. During this period, Northeast Philadelphia Airport also became known as one of the best-equipped general aviation airports on the East Coast with its on-site maintenance facilities and flight schools.
In 1983, Northeast Philadelphia Airport received an upgrade when it opened its new international terminal building. This terminal allowed passengers from all over the world to come to Philadelphia via direct flights from Europe, South America, and other global destinations. The new international terminal also helped increase passenger numbers at Northeast Philadelphia Airport significantly during this period as more travelers chose to fly into this convenient location just outside of downtown Philadelphia.
