Ontario International Airport Abbreviation Code

Ontario International Airport (ONT) opened in August of 1930 as a joint use airport with the Ontario Army Air Field. The airport was initially used for military training and mail transport, but with the onset of World War II, the airport was expanded to accommodate larger aircraft and greater numbers of passengers. In 1945, the airport was returned to civilian control and by 1950 had become an important hub in Southern California’s air transport network. The airport experienced tremendous growth in the 1960s, leading to several expansions and renovations. In 1967, it was noted that ONT served more than two million passengers annually; by 1973 that number had grown to over three million. During this time, ONT saw an increase in cargo operations too; over 5,000 tons of cargo were moved through the facility annually. This growth continued into the late 1970s and early 1980s before leveling off due to economic factors and increased competition from other airports in Southern California. By 1985, ONT was handling nearly six million passengers annually making it one of the busiest airports in California at that time.
