Wausau Airport Abbreviation Code

The Wausau Airport was first established in 1930, when the city of Wausau purchased a small airfield that had been privately owned by a local flying club. This airfield, located just south of the city, was used mainly for recreational flying and featured a grass runway and several small hangars. A few years later, in 1934, the airport was officially recognized by the Federal Government as an airmail stop, and commercial flights began to operate out of the airport. The first scheduled passenger flight left from Wausau Airport in 1937 on a plane operated by Central Airlines. During World War II, the airport was used for military training and cargo flights.

In 1954, the airport underwent its first major expansion with the construction of two new asphalt runways and a new terminal building. With these improvements, more commercial airlines began to offer flights out of Wausau Airport. In 1965, Northwest Orient Airlines began offering direct flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport which made it much easier for travelers to get to their destination quickly. Over the next two decades, more improvements were made including a new passenger terminal building in 1988 and additional runway expansions in 1993 and 1997. Today, Wausau Airport is served by American Airlines with daily non-stop service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport as well as other regional destinations throughout Wisconsin.
