Naypyidaw [nepj ɪ d ɔ ; Burmese »seat of kings«, also »royal city«] , Nay Pyi Taw, new capital (since 2005) and official seat of government of Myanmar (Burma), in the south of the province of Mandalay, around 400 km north of Rangoon ; (2014) 333 500 residents, as Union territory 7 057 km 2 and 1.16 million residents.

The capital was built as a planned city by the then military government since 2000 and is strictly divided into functional districts, each for government, military, shops, apartments, hotels. Naypyidaw is the seat of parliament, ministries and government agencies; Military base with runway; 99 m high Uppatasanti Pagoda with the Buddha’s tooth relic.

Since November 2005, the country’s seat of government has been relocated from the previous capital, Rangoon, to Pyinmana inland (to the nearby Shan or Karen areas inhabited by ethnic minorities) named and declared the new capital of Myanmar. The central location of Naypyidaw was given as the official reason for the relocation of the capital.
