Siem Reap is Cambodia’s second largest city with around 750,000 inhabitants. It is also the city in Cambodia that has the most tourists in a year. The reason, of course, is that one of the world’s largest and most impressive temple facilities is located a few miles north of the city. And if you are only going to visit one temple during your life make sure it becomes Angkor Wat at Siem Reap.
Most tourists wonder, of course, whether they should spend an extra day or two in Siem Reap itself. Yes, they should. This Chinese-inspired city with French ancestry, offers several cultural experiences. Here you can also take the opportunity to shop (real) crafts from Cambodia and great silk products. And if you move a few miles away from the city center itself you will see silk farms, fishing villages and holy temples.
There are no problems with accommodation, and the nightlife is (to say the least) active if you visit the right (or wrong) places. The fact that there is a rich selection of accommodations, restaurants and nightlife is obviously due to all the visitors who come here to “cross off” Angor Wat on the list of things they want to see.
