The former Spanish colony, Spanish Sahara, has been occupied by Morocco since 1975. The indigenous people are Saharans, an Arab-Berber Bedouin people. Many of them today live as refugees in Algeria.

Western Sahara is recognized as an independent state by some 80 countries in the world. No country has recognized Morocco’s claim to Western Sahara.
