The city center is characterized by numerous buildings from the Italian colonial era in the style of Art Deco, neo-Romanesque, neoclassicism and futurism (e.g. Cinema Impero, Fiat Tagliero Building). In 2017 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Asmara developed into a city at the end of the 19th century, became the capital of the Italian colony of Eritrea in 1897 and has been the capital of Eritrea since its independence in 1993.
