Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea, and is quite flat and shallow; the highest point, 5 km south of Visby, is 83 meters above sea level.

The sea has carved the limestone into strange shapes, rauks, which stand as stacks of the sea; such are also found along higher shorelines. The ice moraine cover has largely been washed away, with all of Gotland lying beneath the sea surface after the ice had melted away.

Visby – Gotland’s only city

Visby is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and in Visby there has been a long settlement. The oldest known building, Kruttornet, is built about 1150. About one third of the island’s population lives in Visby.
