Lome, French Lome [l ɔ me], capital, culture and trade center of Togo, on the Gulf of Guinea on a spit, (2020) 2.2 million residents.
Administrative headquarters of the Maritime Region; Seat of a Catholic archbishop, university (since 1970, founded as college in 1965), technical schools for architecture and administration, training center of the Pan-African Foundation for Economic, Social and Cultural Development, Goethe Institute, national library, national museum; Banks, large power plants, petroleum refineries, steel mills, dairy plants, breweries, oil mills, cement factories, chemical industry, telecommunications companies; international Airport. The landlocked states of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger also handle a large part of their foreign trade (free port zone) via the port of Lomé (three rail freight lines into the hinterland).
In the old town there are still buildings from the German colonial era (governor’s palace, neo-Gothic cathedral). The monumental independence monument as well as the administration and bank building set modern accents.
In 1897 the German colonial administration relocated from Togo to Lome, which later also developed into the trade and transport center of Togo.
