Ålesund is located on Norway’s northwestern coastline towards the Atlantic. Thanks to the Atlantic climate, Ålesund is milder than much of the rest of Norway, the average temperature in usually freezing January is +1.4 C.

The city is set on seven larger islands, and the center is on Aspøy, Hessa and Nørvøy, connected by bridges. Lille Aspøy is considered Norway’s most densely populated island. The center is so small and compact that you get around easily on foot, although it is quite hilly. In Ålesund, one usually distinguishes between inner, middle and outer districts.

The outer district is what is around the center of Ålesund: Hessøy, Aspøy and Nørvøy. The middle district is around Nørvasund district. The inner city is around Spjelkavik and on to the borders of Sula and Skodje municipality.

Ellingsøy is considered a district next to the rest of the city due to its location. Ålesund was totally destroyed in a major fire in 1904, and was rebuilt in stone by architects trained in Berlin, well aided financially by the German Emperor Wilhelm II. The result was one of Europe’s most distinctive cities with Art Nouveau architecture.
