Anguilla was first occupied in prehistory by Native American tribes who emigrated from South America. The date of the first European discovery is uncertain but some sources claim that Columbus targeted the island in 1493 while others claim that the island was first discovered by the French in 1564 or 1565.
Anguilla was first colonized by English settlers from Saint Kitts in early 1650. Anguilla was administered by Britain until the beginning of the 19th century, when the island was incorporated together with Saint Kitts and Nevis into a single British possession, which the residents themselves were against. After a brief period as a self-proclaimed independent republic in 1969, Anguilla became a separate British possession in 1980.
Anguilla is well known for its spectacular and ecologically important coral reefs. Anguilla’s thin poor soil is highly unsuitable for agriculture and the island has few land-based natural resources. The main industry is tourism and fishing, where foreign-based companies play an important role in the economy.
