Dili was founded by the Portuguese who declared it the capital of their colony in 1596. During the Second World War, Dili was occupied by the Japanese. East Timor declared independence from Portugal on November 28, 1975. The Indonesian army occupied the city on December 7, 1975. On July 7, 1976, Indonesia annexed the entire territory of the former Portuguese colony and named it Timor Timur (“East Timor”). After years of bloody fighting between the Indonesian army and the local population, with the support of the international community, after a referendum, the now Democratic Republic of East Timor became independent. On May 20, 2002, Dili became the capital of the independent state of East Timor. Dili still suffers from the aftermath of the war. Building and improving the infrastructure remains a high priority. International aid funds and measures are of great importance.
