Kano, capital of the state of Kano, Nigeria, in the north of the country, 507 m above sea level, 4.16 million residents.
Kano is the economic and cultural center of the Hausa, seat of an emir and a university (founded in 1977); PH, museum. Kano is the trading center for a cotton growing area (south of Kano) and for the most important Nigerian peanut growing area (north of Kano) as well as the starting point of the cattle drives and transports to the south of the country. Small industrial businesses can be found in the suburbs: car and bicycle assembly plants, tractor construction, meat processing, oil mills (peanut), fruit and vegetable canning factories, breweries, textile, leather and plastics industries, cement factories, tanneries, handicrafts (fabric dyeing); international Airport.
The old town with flat roof houses and the palace of the emir (15th century) convey a closed cityscape in Sudanese clay construction; 18 km long mud wall with 15 gates.
Kano, seat of a house state that has been known since the 12th century and which adopted Islam in the 14th century, was one of the main trading centers of the Sudan Zone for many centuries as the end of the Trans-Saharan caravans. At the beginning of the 19th century it was conquered by Osman Dan Fodio and became part of his empire. In January 1903 Frederick J. D. Lugard (* 1858, † 1945) captured Kano for the British Empire. In 1967 Kano became the capital of the newly formed state of Kano of Nigeria.
On January 20th In 2012 Kano was the target of a terrorist attack by the Islamist organization Boko Haram; More than 160 people were killed in the attack.
