Located at an important traffic junction, it developed into a trading center and was connected to the railway network in 1929. Due to the deportation of Russian Germans to northern Kazakhstan under Stalin in 1941/42, the proportion of the city’s German population rose sharply. During the 1950s, the area developed into a focus of agricultural »land reclamation«. In 1994 what was then Aqmola was nominated as the new capital of Kazakhstan, and in 1998 the government and parliament moved from the former capital Almaty.
The reasons given for the move were: The country should be ruled from the center instead of the southern periphery, the Kazakh presence should be strengthened in the northern, ethnically Russian-dominated regions, the capital should not be endangered by the high frequency of earthquakes (given in the south).
