Around 1700 the city-kingdom Adjatché was established, which the Portuguese named Porto Novo in 1752. It owed its economic boom to the slave trade with the Portuguese. In 1863 the King of Porto Novo placed himself under French protectorate to protect against the British colony of Lagos, which was renewed in 1882. After conquering the hinterland, Porto Novo became the administrative seat of the French colony of Dahomey in 1904.
