Get to know Rzeszow
You will find the city of Rzeszow in the southeast of Poland, not far from the border with both Ukraine and Slovenia. The city is the capital of Podkarpacie province. Rzeszow has approximately 185,000 inhabitants and is well situated on both sides of the Wislok River. The city has an international airport and has an ever increasing flow of visitors from both home and abroad.
Rzeszow gained city status as early as 1354, but the story stretches far back in time. The story of Rzeszow is, like many other cities in Poland, quite violent. Among other things, the Valakians burned down the city in 1458. And already in 1502 the Tatars again destroyed Rzeszow. In 1638, the Lubomiski families took over Rzeszow, and you still find clear and magnificent traces from them. However, Lubomiski’s admission did not mean that the city became a peaceful place. For example, our brothers in the East, Sweden, conquered Rzeszow several times, most recently in 1702.
Rzeszow was occupied in both world wars, and the ravages of the Nazis during World War II had major consequences for the Jewish community in the city. During the German occupation, the city was also called Reichshof.
Today, Rzeszow is a modern city with several universities. And with this naturally comes a varied and cozy nightlife. Rzeszow has nearly 50,000 students and is the academic hub of the region. It has also left its mark in the business world, and several IT companies have found it sensible to settle in the area around Rzeszow.
The old town of Rzeszow is the natural center for tourists. The old town is not big and it is easy and easy to get most of it on foot. Between the new town, where many of the larger shopping centers are located, and the old town, there are regular buses. Tickets are cheap and are usually bought in small stalls at the bus stops. You can also buy tickets from the driver for a small extra fee. Taxis are affordable and can be an option on slightly longer trips.
