Abbreviation for Stavanger, Norway

Stavanger

Stavanger is Norway’s oil capital and fourth largest city. Stavanger is located in the southwest of Norway, as close to the UK as you can get. Stavanger was a trading center in the district dating back to the Viking Age, but did not receive city status until 1425.

The center of Stavanger is around Vågen, and is small and compact, with narrow car-free streets, open squares and the central city park with the lake Breiavatnet.

To the west of Vågen lies Old Stavanger, also called Straen, with its many small white wooden houses, most dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. This is Northern Europe’s best preserved wooden house. At Sola are some of Norway’s best sandy beaches.
