Thimphu [- pu], capital of Bhutan, 2600 m above sea level, in a high valley, 79,200 residents; Crafts, small power plant.
Thimphu is dominated by the Tashiohho Dzong meeting house; the huge building, the tower of which still comes from the oldest monastery (17th century) in the country, houses the throne room as well as government authorities and the summer residence of the priests. Further in the valley of the shrine for King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who died in 1972.
Thimphu has been the capital since 1960.
