Viareggio – the beach of Tuscany

Viareggio for Tourists
Viareggio is no big city. With around 60,000 inhabitants, Viareggio is primarily a tourist city that blooms in the bathing season, ie from mid-May to September. Viareggio is also great as a starting point for tours of Tuscany. For example, it is only 18 km to Pisa, 20 km to Lucca, 90 km to Florence and 30 km to Livorno. The town was historically a fishing village. Now it is best known for making luxury boats. The beaches are of high quality, but remember that almost all the beaches are private and it costs money to lie on them. Public beaches are free, but rarely hold the same quality.
Sights in Viareggio are primarily the Art Novou buildings. As a result of a city fire, several houses were built in Art Novau style. Visit Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Mazzini. In the latter place you will find the magnificent Palazzo delle Muse. Check out the cinema along the beautiful seafront. The seafront has many landmark buildings, such as the Gran Caffe and the Galleria del Libro.
The nightlife is good, especially in the summer. There are many pubs, discos, bars and pizzerias. The pizzerias on the seafront are higher in price than pizzerias further into the city. There are many shops, and in addition to souvenirs and swimwear, you will find plenty of clothing and equipment for boats. Remember that Viareggio is one of the most important cities in Europe when it comes to yachts.
The hotels in the city are of a good standard and you get them in all price ranges. We recommend finding a hotel along the boardwalk. It will most likely be where you spend 90% of the time, so why not stay nearby? The more you pay, you save on the deals these hotels have with their private beaches and taxi bills.
