Bonn is no big city. With just over 300,000 inhabitants, Bonn is ranked as Germany’s 19th largest city. The fact is that 2 other cities were incorporated in Bonn in the late 60’s. Thus, one can say that Bonn consists of three major districts. These are Bonn city center, Bad Godesberg west of the Rhine and Beuel located east of the Rhine. Artists, poets and tourists alike have been charmed by this city for many years. We definitely recommend Bonn as a weekend city.
Points of interest in Bonn are the double church (Doppelkirche) which was built as early as 1151, the Godesburg fortress, the Poppelsdorf castle and the University building. The university is a huge building in 1818 where, among other things, Pope Benedict XVI was a professor. Beethoven is of course a major attraction in Bonn and you can visit the house where Beethoven was born. In addition, there are a number of other attractions. Perhaps the best attraction is the downtown marketplace where you will find sales stalls, outdoor restaurants, street performers and artists of various kinds. The square is also a meeting place for the locals where they cultivate the social as well as shopping for the essentials.
The nightlife in Bonn is good. There are more than 500 pubs and taverns in the city and a number of good eateries. For those interested in culture, Bonn can offer opera and at least 12 theaters. Bonn has a reputation as a real shopping town and the best shopping is centered around the town square where you will find countless shops. There are also several major shopping malls in Bonn. If you like a museum, there are several museums in the center of Bonn. This is all the pride of the city and these museums have more than 1 million visitors a year. Remember that Bonn is close to cities such as Cologne and Dusseldorf and that the roads are good for those who have the opportunity to rent a rental car.
