Dental Abbreviations

Dental medicine (also dentistry ) is an applied medical and biological science. It is a branch of dentistry that studies the structure, functions, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental diseases .

Medical professionals who treat diseases of the teeth and oral cavity are called dentists . Previously, they were officially called dentists , and colloquially – dentists. All dentists who practice their profession are members of the Bulgarian Dental Association (BDA) .

During the Middle Ages , dentistry, along with other branches of medicine, declined in Europe. However, the Arab school is developing some methods of treating and diagnosing diseases. In his medical book, Hali Abaz recommends pouring boiling oil into the open pulp in case of tooth disease. In his Canon of Medicine , Avicenna described the use of arsenic as a radical dental treatment, [16] and the Arab physician Scrapion described the number of tooth roots.

Hospitals were set up at monasteries in Europe, some of which became medical schools. In the 6th century, the first monastic hospital was established in the mountains of Monte Cassino , Italy , where monks also treated diseases of the oral cavity. In the ninth century, the first university was founded in the Benedictine monastery in Salerno, where medicine is also studied.

Dental extractions have been used to treat various diseases. During the Middle Ages and throughout the 19th century, dentistry was not a profession in itself, and barbers or general practitioners often performed dental procedures. The barbers were mainly limited to extracting diseased teeth in order to relieve pain and eliminate chronic infection.

During the Renaissance, the founder of modern anatomy, Andreas Vesalius, studied medicine in Paris . Ambrose Pere , the founder of modern surgery, made the first descriptions of dental surgery. In 1560 he became the first to close the perforation of the palate with an obturator. Thanks to his merits, he rose to “the king’s chief surgeon.”
