El Paso International Airport Abbreviation Code

El Paso International Airport (ELP) was built in 1928 and originally named the El Paso Municipal Airport. The airport was located on the grounds of what is now Fort Bliss and served as a training base for the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, the airport was returned to civilian use, and in 1953 its name was changed to El Paso International Airport. It is now one of the busiest airports in Texas with over 5 million passengers each year.

In 1990, a $27 million expansion project began that added new gates, expanded runways and taxiways, and improved terminal facilities. This included a new concourse with seven gates and a large baggage claim area. A new control tower was also constructed at this time. ELP underwent another major expansion in 2003 that included additional gates, an international arrivals building, an automated baggage system, improved terminal amenities such as restaurants and shops, and additional parking lots for both long-term and short-term parking. The latest addition to ELP is the Sun Metro Transit Center which opened in 2020 providing passengers easy access to public transportation options within El Paso city limits.

Today ELP offers more than 100 daily departures to destinations throughout North America including Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) as well as many other cities across the United States. Additionally, ELP has become an important gateway for international flights from Mexico with AeroMexico offering direct service from El Paso to Mexico City since 2017.
