Pensacola Regional Airport began as an emergency landing field in the early 1920s. The airport was initially used as a refueling station for military aircraft and was eventually expanded to become a training facility for the Navy. During World War II, the airport became an important hub for training pilots and providing support to Allied forces. After the war, the airport continued to grow in size and importance, becoming a regional hub for air traffic in the years that followed.
In 1967, Pensacola Regional Airport underwent its first major renovation, with numerous new amenities being added such as additional runways and a new control tower.
