FAMAS stands for "Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne," which translates to "Assault Rifle from the Saint-Étienne Weapon Factory" in English. It refers to a select-fire assault rifle developed and manufactured by the French state-owned arms manufacturer Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne. Designed in the late 1960s to replace outdated firearms in the French military, the FAMAS gained widespread recognition for its unique bullpup configuration, which places the magazine behind the trigger group to reduce overall length while maintaining barrel length for improved accuracy. Chambered in the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber, the FAMAS features a distinctive forward handguard with integrated bipod, a thumbhole stock, and a curved 25-round magazine. It has served as the standard-issue rifle for the French Armed Forces since its adoption in 1978, seeing action in various conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world.
