Established in 1941, it was originally known as the Natrona County Airport. Prior to World War II, the airport was a small regional airfield with a single runway and a few hangars. During the war, it was used by the military for training pilots and mechanics. After the war ended, it returned to its former civilian use as an airfield for local travel and cargo transport. In 1949, it officially became Casper-Natrona County International Airport.

In the 1950s, several improvements were made to CPR such as lengthening of runways and building additional hangars to accommodate larger aircrafts. In 1961, The Federal Aviation Administration designated CPR as an international port of entry allowing international flight operations at the airport. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s many other improvements were made including expansion of passenger terminal building and addition of new facilities such as fuel storage tanks and parking lots.

From 2000 onwards CPR has seen significant growth in passenger traffic due to increased demand for air travel in Wyoming region. To meet this demand various modernizations have been made including installation of new navigational aids such as Instrument Landing System (ILS) & Global Positioning System (GPS). The airport also saw various expansions such as construction of new taxiways & aprons along with expansion of cargo terminal area in order to handle more freight traffic.

Location
The airport is located 12 kilometers northwest of downtown Casper. Drivers arriving from outside the airport can access the airport via US Highway 20 (Yellostone Highway). If you are traveling from the north-west (Yellostone National Park), it is best to drive on US Highway 20 towards Casper and watch out for the signs leading to the airport just before the city. For all other drivers, it is best to use either Highway 220 or Interstate 25 to Casper, then take US Highway 20 toward Yellostone, paying attention to the signs that lead to the airport.
