CCJ stands for "Caribbean Court of Justice," the highest judicial institution in the Caribbean region, established in 2001 to serve as the final court of appeal for member states of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Headquartered in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the CCJ plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and promoting judicial independence across the Caribbean. As a regional court with jurisdiction over both civil and criminal matters, the CCJ hears cases involving constitutional law, commercial disputes, and interpretations of CARICOM treaties and agreements. In addition to its appellate jurisdiction, the CCJ also serves as an advisory body on legal matters and provides alternative dispute resolution services to member states. By providing a forum for the resolution of legal disputes and ensuring uniformity in the interpretation and application of Caribbean law, the CCJ contributes to the development of a cohesive and integrated Caribbean legal system, fostering stability, accountability, and respect for the rule of law in the region.
