Joplin Regional Airport Code

In 1948, the Joplin Regional Airport was officially opened and became the first commercial airport in the area. The airport was constructed to accommodate airmail delivery between Kansas City and Tulsa. In the 1950s, the airport saw an increase in military activity due to its proximity to Camp Crowder, which was a major training site for US military personnel during World War II. During this time, the airport also served as a base for private aircraft used by businesses and corporations in the area. As air travel increased in popularity over the years, so did Joplin Regional Airport’s passenger traffic. In 1965, a new terminal building was built that could handle up to 200 passengers per hour. This terminal included a restaurant, gift shop, and other amenities for travelers. Over the decades that followed, additional improvements were made to make Joplin Regional Airport more accommodating for its growing customer base. These improvements included new runways and taxiways as well as more efficient baggage handling systems and updated navigational aids. By 2020, Joplin Regional Airport had become one of the busiest airports in Missouri with over 400 daily flights servicing both domestic and international destinations.
