GID, which stands for "Gender Identity Disorder," was a diagnostic category in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). It was used to describe individuals who experience significant distress or discomfort due to a misalignment between their assigned gender at birth and their internal sense of gender identity. However, in the fifth edition of the DSM (DSM-5), published in 2013, GID was replaced with the diagnosis of "Gender Dysphoria," reflecting a shift in understanding and terminology towards emphasizing the distress associated with incongruence rather than pathologizing the identity itself. Gender dysphoria acknowledges that the distress experienced by individuals arises not from their gender identity per se, but from the societal and interpersonal challenges they face as a result of being transgender or gender nonconforming. The change in diagnostic terminology reflects a broader recognition within the mental health community of the importance of affirming and supporting diverse gender identities and expressions, while also providing access to appropriate medical and psychological care for individuals experiencing distress related to their gender identity. This shift has contributed to greater understanding and acceptance of transgender and gender-diverse individuals, as well as improvements in healthcare practices and policies aimed at addressing their unique needs and promoting their well-being.
