Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA) was originally established in 1929 as a Marine Corps Air Station. The airport was part of the base that trained pilots for the US Navy during World War II. After the war, the air station closed and was replaced by an open-air general aviation airport. In 1951, CCIA began to develop into a regional commercial airport with flights to Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and other nearby cities. The 1960s saw a major expansion of CCIA with new runways and terminals being built as well as additional airlines offering service to more destinations. In 1977, CCIA opened its first international terminal and began offering flights to Mexico City. This marked an important milestone for the airport as it established itself as an international gateway for South Texas. In recent years, CCIA has undergone further development with new terminals being built in order to accommodate larger aircrafts and increased passenger traffic. Additionally, more airlines have been added providing service to more destinations both domestically and internationally including Central America and Caribbean islands such as Jamaica and Puerto Rico. Today, Corpus Christi International Airport is a thriving hub of activity that serves over two million passengers per year making it one of the busiest airports in Texas.
