Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) was originally constructed in 1950 and opened in June of that year. In 1984, the airport was renamed Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in honor of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The name change coincided with a major expansion of the airport which included a new terminal building, more parking spaces, additional runway capacity, and improved road access. Since then, BWI has become a major hub for both domestic and international flights serving millions of passengers each year. In 2018, BWI underwent its largest expansion since 1984 as part of a $125 million project that included an expanded security checkpoint area and new concessions area. With these improvements, BWI is well-positioned to meet the needs of travelers for years to come.
