Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) was first established in 1936 as a training base for the United States Army Air Corps. The airport was initially used as a satellite airfield for Moffett Field, located in nearby Sunnyvale, California and served as an auxiliary airfield for the Presidio of Monterey. During World War II, the airport was used as an Army Air Corps flight training center and housed several squadrons of military aircraft. After the war ended in 1945, the airport reverted to civilian control and began to offer commercial flights. In 1948, the City of Monterey leased the airport from the federal government and it became known as Monterey Peninsula Airport.
The 1950s saw considerable growth at MRY with new passenger terminals being added, new runways being constructed and new airlines joining the roster of carriers serving Monterey. In 1956, American Airlines began offering daily service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Monterey Regional Airport (MRY). This marked a significant milestone for MRY as it marked its transition from a small regional airport to one that could serve larger cities like LAX on a regular basis.
In 1962, United Airlines began operating out of MRY with flights connecting San Francisco International Airport (SFO) with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This further expanded MRY’s reach and brought more passengers through its doors each year. During this time, MRY also served as a hub for smaller airlines such as Air West which offered flights to smaller airports throughout California like Fresno-Yosemite International Airport (FAT) and San Jose International Airport (SJC).
