Lake Charles Regional Airport opened in the spring of 1941, and was originally called the Lake Charles Army Airfield. The airport was built during World War II as a training site for B-26 Marauder bombers. The facility was later renamed Chennault Air Force Base after General Claire Chennault, who was a leader of the Flying Tigers during WWII. In 1961, the airport became an active civil airport and was renamed Lake Charles Regional Airport. The airport has undergone many changes and improvements over the years, including a new main terminal that opened in 2007.
