Lafayette Regional Airport Abbreviation Code

Lafayette Regional Airport (LFT) first opened its doors in 1931, when the local Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Lafayette, began construction on a small airfield. The airport was initially intended to be used by local businesses for transportation and mail delivery, as well as for recreational flying. In 1936, the airport was officially designated as Lafayette Regional Airport by the U.S. Department of Commerce. For the next decade, it remained a small municipal airport with only a few flights a day and limited services available to travelers.

In 1947, LFT underwent its first major expansion when construction began on an additional runway and terminal building. This expansion allowed for larger aircraft to land at the airport and increased the number of flights into and out of LFT. Over the next several decades, LFT would continue to expand its facilities and services in order to meet increasing demands from both commercial and private customers. By 1970, Lafayette Regional Airport had become an important hub for regional travel with multiple airlines providing service to destinations throughout Louisiana and beyond.

The 1980s saw further improvements at LFT including new hangars and expanded cargo facilities that allowed for an increase in freight transportation services. By 1990s more than 300 flights per week were taking off from or landing at Lafayette Regional Airport making it one of the busiest airports in Louisiana. During this time period there were also several renovations made to improve passenger experience such as updated ticketing counters, improved lighting systems on runways, expanded parking lots and terminal buildings which all helped make Lafayette Regional Airport a more efficient travel hub.
