Wilmington International Airport (ILM) is a public airport located in Wilmington, North Carolina. It is owned and operated by the New Hanover County Airport Authority and serves as the primary air transport hub for southeastern North Carolina. ILM was established in 1930 as the Wilmington Municipal Airport, with its first flight taking off on May 28th of that year. The airport was initially used for military training exercises and commercial flights to nearby cities such as Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Raleigh-Durham. In the mid-1940s, ILM was renamed New Hanover County Airport due to its new ownership by the county government. Throughout the remainder of the 1940s and 1950s, ILM saw a tremendous growth in air traffic as more people began to travel by plane for business and leisure purposes.
In 1965, New Hanover County Airport was renamed Wilmington International Airport after receiving approval from the FAA to serve international destinations. This allowed for direct flights to Canada and other countries around the world. To accommodate this increased demand, several new runways were constructed over time along with a larger terminal building that opened in 1989. In recent years, ILM has seen continued growth with more than 1 million passengers passing through annually since 2011. Today, it serves as an important transport hub for southeastern North Carolina with direct flights to major cities across America as well as several international destinations such as Toronto and Mexico City.
