Albuquerque International Sunport Airport Abbreviation Code

The Albuquerque International Sunport Airport first opened in 1939, originally as the Albuquerque Municipal Airport. It was the first airport built in New Mexico and was initially used for military purposes by the United States Army Air Corps. The airport was later expanded to accommodate commercial flights and renamed the Albuquerque International Airport in 1948. In 1960, its name was changed again to Sunport after a $3 million renovation that included a new terminal building and runway extension. Sunport is now home to seven airlines offering daily flights to more than 20 cities throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. In addition to passenger service, Sunport is also served by several cargo carriers, private charters and air ambulance services. The airport boasts two runways with an average annual total of over 300,000 takeoffs and landings. To accommodate this traffic, numerous parking lots are available for both short-term and long-term stays at affordable rates. In recent years, Sunport has become increasingly popular amongst travelers due to its convenient location near downtown Albuquerque as well as its close proximity to nearby attractions like the Sandia Mountains and Petroglyph National Monument.
