Meadows Field Airport was initially opened in 1927, when it was known as Kern County Airport. The airport was built on land donated by the Meadows family, which is why it was later renamed Meadows Field. During World War II, the airport served as a training base for the United States Army Air Force. After the war, the airport returned to civilian operations and began to expand its commercial operations. In 1953, a new terminal building was constructed and air traffic control towers were added in 1962 and 1967. By this time, American Airlines had started offering flights from Meadows Field to Los Angeles International Airport.
In 1974, Kern County acquired ownership of the airport and began making improvements to its facilities and services. Over the next few decades, more airlines began offering flights from Meadows Field, including Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. The number of passengers at Meadows Field also increased over this time period as more people chose to fly out of Bakersfield instead of Los Angeles or other nearby airports. Today, Meadows Field is one of California’s busiest airports with over 1 million passengers annually flying out of its two runways. Along with providing commercial flights, Meadows Field also serves as an important gateway for private aircrafts with general aviation facilities located onsite.
