George Bush Intercontinental Airport Abbreviation Code

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) opened in 1969 and is the largest airport in Houston, Texas. It was originally named for William P. Hobby, a former governor of Texas. In 1977, it was renamed after George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States and a Houston resident. The airport has since seen huge growth and development over the years, becoming one of the busiest airports in the world.

Since its opening in 1969, IAH has gone through numerous renovations and expansions to keep up with the demands of air travel. In 1981, work began on an expansion that would double the size of the airport from 1 million to 2 million square feet. This expansion included two new concourses and a new control tower that was completed in 1983. The airport has also added additional gates to accommodate more flights as well as improved infrastructure such as parking garages and baggage claim areas. In addition to these expansions, IAH underwent a major renovation in 2004 which included new restaurants and shopping outlets as well as updated terminals and gates. This renovation allowed IAH to become one of only five airports worldwide with US Customs pre-clearance facilities for international passengers arriving from certain countries such as Canada, Ireland, Bermuda, Jamaica, and Barbados. These facilities allow passengers to clear customs before their arrival at their final destination in the United States thus saving time upon arrival at their destination airport.
