The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) was first proposed in 2006 as a solution to the increasing demand for air travel in the Panama City area. The airport was designed to provide an alternative to the overcrowded and outdated Panama City-Bay County International Airport. Construction of ECP began in 2007 and was completed in 2010. The airport opened for commercial air travel on May 23rd, 2010.
The new airport is located approximately 11 miles northwest of downtown Panama City and is situated on 4,000 acres of land. It features a single runway that is 10,500 feet long and 150 feet wide, two taxiways, two terminal buildings, and a control tower that stands at 125 feet tall. The main terminal has seven gates with jet bridges for boarding aircrafts and includes a variety of amenities such as restaurants, retail shops, lounges and more. In addition to the main terminal building there is also an international terminal which serves travelers from Mexico and Central America who come to visit or conduct business in the area.
Since its opening in 2010 ECP has seen tremendous growth in both passengers served and flights offered by airlines operating out of the airport. In 2015 alone over 700 thousand passengers traveled through ECP making it one of the busiest airports in Florida’s panhandle region. Currently airlines offering service from Panama City include Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines as well as several regional carriers such as Silver Airways and Sun Country Airlines. With its convenient location near both US Highway 98 and US 231 ECP is quickly becoming one of the most popular airports for those looking to fly into or out of Northwest Florida’s panhandle region.
