Dothan Airport has been an important part of the Dothan, Alabama community since its construction in 1942. The airport was originally built as a military training facility for the United States Army Air Corps and served as an aviation training center during World War II. The first civilian flight at the airport took place in 1945 and the airport officially opened to commercial air traffic in 1947. In 1953, a 4,000-foot runway was constructed to accommodate larger aircraft, and the terminal building was expanded in 1962. Since then, the airport has seen significant growth with the addition of new service providers such as Delta Airlines and American Airlines. In 2008, a new control tower was built and a new terminal opened in 2011. Today, Dothan Airport serves over 500,000 passengers annually with direct flights to major cities such as Atlanta, Charlotte, and Orlando. It is one of the main hubs for regional air travel in southeastern Alabama and continues to play an important role in connecting people from all over the area to destinations around the world.
