Northern Maine Regional Airport at Presque Isle first opened in 1963, when it was known as Loring Air Force Base. The airport was one of the largest Strategic Air Command bases in the United States. It was home to a variety of aircraft, including B-52 bombers and KC-135 tankers. After the base closed in 1994, it was converted into a civil airport. The runway was extended to 8,000 feet long and the control tower was upgraded. In 2004, the airport underwent a major renovation which included new lighting and navigational systems as well as an improved terminal building. The airport also added additional hangars for private planes, corporate jets, and military aircrafts. Currently, Northern Maine Regional Airport is seen as an important regional transportation hub with direct flights to Boston and Newark as well as connecting flights to other cities across the United States. It also serves as an important center for freight transport with several cargo carriers providing services from Presque Isle to other points in Maine and beyond. Additionally, the airport has become increasingly popular for recreational use due to its picturesque location at the edge of Aroostook County’s rolling hills. With its modern facilities and convenient location, Northern Maine Regional Airport is well-positioned to serve both commercial air travelers and recreational pilots alike for many years to come.
