What is ADHD?

ADHD is the acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a type of neurological disorder, which arises in childhood, often as a genetic factor, and in many cases accompanying the individual in his adult life.

The main characteristics or symptoms are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, resulting in the difficulty of relationship with the family and with other children and teachers in the school environment. Still in school, ADHD patients are described as “restless”, “agitated”, “disobedient” or “living in the moonlit”, generating learning difficulties brought on by lack of concentration.

In addition to the genetic factor, there are other theories about the causes of the occurrence of ADHD in certain individuals, such as alcohol and nicotine intake during pregnancy, problems in childbirth and fetal distress, exposure to lead, etc.

The treatment of ADHD is made on the basis of medications or techniques psychotherapists. The treatment phase must be accompanied by professionals specialized in the areas of Neurology, Psychology, Psychiatry, Speech Therapy and others. Some medications used in treatment are the methylphenidate-based psychostimulants, commercially sold as Ritalin or Concerta. Only a medical specialist can make the diagnosis and indicate the most appropriate treatment.
