Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) was originally built in 1936 as Daniel Field, after the mayor of Augusta, Thomas W. Daniel. The airport was initially used for military purposes, as well as for commercial flights by Eastern Air Lines and Delta Air Lines. In 1941, the City of Augusta purchased Daniel Field from the federal government and it became known as Augusta Municipal Airport. In 1965, the airport underwent a major renovation which included a new terminal building and runway extensions. In 2003, the airport changed its name to Augusta Regional Airport to better reflect its regional service area. Since then, AGS has grown significantly and now offers non-stop flights to seven major cities across the United States. The airport is also home to several flight schools, corporate aircrafts and general aviation operations. It continues to be an important part of both local transportation and economic development in Augusta and the surrounding areas.
