Boise Airport, also known as Boise Air Terminal or Gowen Field, is the primary airport serving the city of Boise, Idaho. It was originally established in 1936 as a military airfield and was named after U.S. Army Major Bruce Gowen. In 1940, the airport was transferred to the city of Boise and renamed Boise Air Terminal. During World War II, it served as a training base for pilots and bombers. After the war ended in 1945, commercial passenger flights began to be operated from the airport by Northwest Airlines and United Airlines.
In 1955, a new terminal building was opened at Boise Airport which included an observation deck where passengers could watch planes taking off and landing. The airport continued to grow over the years with additional runways being constructed in 1966 and 1974 respectively. By 1981, almost one million passengers were traveling through Boise Airport annually making it one of the busiest airports in Idaho at that time.
In recent years, major renovations have been made to improve passenger experience at Boise Airport including upgrades to its security systems and construction of a new concourse which opened in 2011 featuring nine gates for larger aircrafts such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320 family aircrafts. The concourse also includes two restaurants offering local cuisine as well as amenities such as charging stations for electronic devices and free Wi-Fi access throughout the terminal building. In addition to these improvements, Boise Airport has also added more parking spaces for travelers making their way through its terminals each year which now number over 2 million annually according to statistics from 2019 making it one of the busiest airports in Idaho once again today.
