Charleston International Airport was established in the early 1950s, when the City of Charleston decided to create an airport to serve the growing population of the area. The first terminal building was completed in 1953 and the first commercial flight occurred in 1955. The airport quickly grew to become a major hub for travelers from all over the Southeast. In 1971, it became known as Charleston International Airport, and by 1980 it had become one of the busiest airports in South Carolina.

The growth and success of Charleston International Airport has continued into modern times. In 2012, it was completely renovated into a state-of-the-art facility with more than 100 gates, two runways, and a variety of amenities for passengers. In 2017, it became one of only two airports in South Carolina to offer international flights with nonstop service to London Heathrow Airport. In 2019, it underwent another major renovation that included an expansion of its terminal facilities and added several new restaurants and retail stores. The renovations also included upgraded security measures such as body scanners and facial recognition technology that help keep passengers safe while traveling through the airport. Today, Charleston International Airport is one of the premier air travel hubs in the Southeast region for both domestic and international passengers alike.

Location
The airport, which opened in 1929, is located 14 kilometers northwest of downtown Charleston. The quickest way to get to the airport for drivers traveling from outside the airport is to use Interstate 526. Take I-526 to Exit # 16, then follow signs to the parking lots.

Passengers arriving by train take either the “Palmetto” or the “Silver Meteor” route of the Amtrak to the Charleston Rail Station and then change to bus route # 11 of the public transport company CARTA.
