Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport was established in 1929. It was originally known as the Charlottesville Municipal Airport and was located on 200 acres of land donated by the University of Virginia. The airport’s first hangar and terminal building were constructed in 1936, and the first commercial flight took off from the airport in 1937. During World War II, the airport was used as a training facility for military personnel. After the war, it became a popular destination for recreational pilots and small aircrafts. In 1959, it officially changed its name to Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport and began to expand its services to include larger aircrafts such as jets. In 1963, air cargo services began at the airport and soon after, two runways were built to accommodate larger planes.
The airport continued to grow throughout the 70s and 80s with an increasing number of airlines offering service to Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport. In 1987, an additional terminal building was constructed to accommodate this growth in traffic. By 1994, over 250 flights per day were being handled at the airport. In recent years, many improvements have been made to further enhance passenger experience including a remodeled lobby area with updated amenities such as free Wi-Fi access, improved security measures including TSA Precheck lanes and baggage screening areas, expanded parking lots with shuttle service to all terminals and gates, improved concessions options throughout all terminals, and more efficient boarding processes for passengers with disabilities or special needs.
