Columbia Regional Airport (COU) is located in Columbia, Missouri and has been serving the community since 1940. It began as a small grass airstrip for private aircraft which grew over the years to become an important hub for commercial and military aviation. In 1942, the United States Air Force established an airfield on the site of what is now Columbia Regional Airport. The airfield was used as a training base during World War II and housed several squadrons of fighter planes. After the war, the airfield was closed and local business people purchased the land to create a commercial airport.
Over time, COU has grown to serve over 100,000 passengers annually with nonstop flights to locations such as Chicago, Dallas/Ft Worth, Denver, Atlanta and Orlando. The airport also serves as an alternate landing site for St. Louis International Airport (STL). In recent years, COU has continued to invest in infrastructure improvements such as runway extensions and new hangars for corporate aircrafts. Additionally, COU recently opened its new terminal building with modern amenities such as digital ticketing kiosks and a restaurant with outdoor seating located in the terminal lobby area.
