Dayton International Airport Abbreviation Code

Dayton International Airport, formerly known as Dayton Municipal Airport, was originally opened in 1927 and was the first airport in the state of Ohio. Located just seven miles from downtown Dayton, the airport quickly became a hub for air travel in the Midwest. In 1937, it was renamed to James M. Cox Dayton International Airport after James M. Cox, the former Governor of Ohio who had died earlier that year. The airport underwent several expansions over the years to accommodate more passengers and larger aircrafts. By 1950, it had become one of the busiest airports in the United States with over 200 daily flights and more than 500,000 passengers passing through each year.

In 1972, a new terminal building was opened which featured two concourses with a total of 30 gates. This terminal complex served as the gateway to air travel for Dayton for nearly 40 years until 2011 when a new terminal building opened up that featured state-of-the-art technology and amenities such as an automated baggage handling system and an expanded security checkpoint area. This new terminal also included four concourses with a total of 50 gates which allowed for increased capacity and improved customer service levels at the airport. Today, Dayton International Airport serves more than three million travelers annually with direct flights to major cities across the United States and Canada as well as seasonal charters throughout Europe and beyond.
