The airport was the first municipally owned airport in the United States and was used for both commercial and private aviation. In 1953, the airport was renamed Des Moines International Airport to reflect its growing international presence. Located 5 kilometers south of downtown Des Moines. Drivers coming from outside the city can reach the Him fastest if you drive from Des Moines on State Highway 5 to exit # 99 or # 97 and from there follow the airport signs on Army Post Road.
